Thoughts on basketball and football

February 11 My Current Final Four
Back to Full Blog

1st i have to start with Florida, still the best team in the nation with the best starting 5 and very underrated depth. they have answered the challenge and the pressures of defending national champion with continued excellence so far and have been even better than last year. college gamenight on espn said you could argue that they have the best player at each position in the nation in their starting 5 and thats not too far from the truth. they have joakim noah at center, the reigning final four mvp and one of the most athletic, intense, and versatile players around and he could be an nba star if he gets more of an offensive game. al horford is a big, strong, athletic beast. he's a powerful finisher and better ball-handler than most big men out there. corey brewer is the nba prototype, an athletic silky-smooth slasher and talented scorer, and he knows he doesnt have to carry the team and be the star every nite. lee humphrey may be the best outside shooter in the nation and taurean green is the team's sparkplug, a strong, quick, and athletic point guard who fires up the offense and shoots a high percentage, excelling at taking the ball to the rack. the gators have stood up and faced numerous challenges throughout the year, beating elite teams and taking down rivals on the road, blowing out elite squads like ohio state and grinding out a tough one at kentucky. their only losses came against kansas, an inconsistent but extremly talented team stocked with future nba players, and florida state and vanderbilt, both on the road. after all this florida is still the class of college basketball and credit billy donovan with keeping them motivated after tasting the top.

my next final four team is north carolina, the most dominant team in the acc and carrying huge momentum after a big win over duke on the road and a blowout of wake forest this weekend when they topped 100 points for the 5th time this season. they have loads of talent and great athletes, probably a better or equal squad to the one that won the title 2 seasons ago, and their only questions or possible blockades to success are the team's youth. tyler hansbrough hasn't improved or changed his game a whole lot since last year but he is huge and truly the definition of a beast inside and a great athlete and model of consistency. brandan wright is a fun player to watch, with rare athletcism and freakish length, he is a smooth scorer with nice potential, but he is another one of those guys who doesnt seem to care at times. other notable dudes are ty lawson, also known as raymond felton 2.0 with the same combination of strength and speed and ability to drive and finish with ease and run the fastbreak. his two late game drives against duke were huge and sealed the win. reshawn terry is also a great complementary scorer and senior leader.

texas a&m is my next team, a great college basketball story and one of the most balanced and best coached squad's around, it's cliche to say now but billy gillipsie has done such an amazing job rebuilding the program. acie law is one of my favorite players and one of the the best college players around, he is flawless in the cluctch, an amazing and fearless leader, as well as a great shooter, scorer, and playmaker. the only way to describe him is by calling him a basketball player, he does watever it takes to win and has the intangibles as well to excell as a point guard at the next level. other big players are joseph jones, their strong inside presence, and their lithuanian big man, a versatile and solid euro style post player who is solid inside and can step out and hit threes. against texas the aggies showed their amazing depth as well, with plenty of speed and athletcism coming off the pine, and it truly is hard to find any flaws with these players. they rely on defense and their great team speed and athleticism but they have guys who can shoot as well, and these guys could be destined to win it all and complete the rebuilding process, becoming one of the best sports stories of the year. the team has not tasted much success in their college careers and final fours are new to the school but it is impossible to deny how good they are.

my last final four team has to be a sleeper and im pickin the #2 team in the weaker big east, georgetown. this is their best team in a while and they showed signs of breaking out and becoming a title contender in last year's tournament, returning georgetown to prominence. they were inconsistent this season and got off to a slow start but they are on a big winning streak and just got a huge win over #12 marquette. they have the pieces to win it they just have to put up a consistent stretch to end the year and do something in the big east tourney. roy hibbert came to g-town raw but is a true 7 foot big man now, a good athlete and powerful finisher who knows how to get to the free throw line and grab offensive boards. jeff green is also a fantastic athlete with a versatile game and he complements hibbert perfectly. guard play is a little inconsistent but with the 2-headed monster of hibbert and green i think the hoyas can make it.
